Activity is part of the project Diálogos Musicais, held by ABM and Moinho Cultural

“The mandolin as an instrument of diverse musical languages and its role in today’s music”. This is the theme of the conference taking place next Saturday (23rd), starting at 2pm, with the presence of Norberto Cruz, Eduardo Martinelli, Tuniko Goulart, Ricardo Sandoval and Edu Miranda. The conference is online and will be streamed on the YouTube and Facebook of ABM (Associação de Bandolins da Madeira / Madeira Mandolin Association), of Portugal, and the Instituto Moinho Cultural Sul-Americano, of Brazil.

The conference is one of the activities of the project Diálogos Musicais Ibero-Americanos (Ibero-American Musical Dialogues), held by ABM and the Instituto Moinho Cultural Sul-Americano. The project began last week and continues until June, with weekly programming, always on Saturdays. All programming is free and online.

For Norberto Cruz, the conference is a moment of sharing. “This moment will be a sharing, a conversation between renowned musicians so we can see the role of the mandolin as an instrument of the various languages and how, today, it connects with today’s music. A vision both from instrumentalists who play the mandolin and its repertoire, as well as from other musicians who have had contact with this type of instrument, and what the ‘outside’ view is in this timbral construction of repertoire”, he states.

The initiative seeks cultural closeness between Europe and the Americas, and, for that, has been offering knowledge in the field of music through masterclasses, conferences and concerts. The project has the support of backers such as: República Portuguesa, DGArtes, the Regional Government of Madeira, the Regional Secretariat of Tourism and Culture, the Regional Secretariat of Education, Science and Technology, República Portuguesa – Culture, Instituto Camões – Institute for Cooperation and the Portuguese Language, Funarte and Ibermúsicas. The Portal das Artes and Ligra are partners.

Norberto Cruz
Norberto Cruz is a recognized performer on the international mandolin scene. He has appeared as a soloist in Portugal, Italy, Estonia, Bulgaria, Spain, Brazil and Austria, where he collaborated with important agents such as the “Alla Scala” Theater, in Milan, the “Fenice” Theater in Venice and the “Roma Sinfonietta” Orchestra of Rome, having been a mandolin performer since 1990. He performed under the direction of prestigious conductors such as Mstislav Rostropovich and Riccardo Muti and alongside internationally renowned musicians, such as Andrea Bocelli, Noa, Plácido Domingo and Júlio Pereira. He is one of the founders, together with Emanuele and Valdimiro Buzi, of the “Quinteto a Plettro Giuseppe Anedda”, receiving in 2012 the Medal of Representation of the President of the Italian Republic. He is considered among the most prestigious Portuguese mandolinists, always receiving great acclaim from audiences and critics. He graduated in mandolin with honorable mention from the Conservatório Superior “Alfredo Casella” of L’Aquila, under the guidance of one of the most prestigious mandolinists in the world, Dorina Frati, and, in 2016, obtained a master’s degree in Musical Training and ensemble classes from IPS – Esart (Portugal). He has worked as a mandolin professor at the Conservatório Escola Profissional das Artes da Madeira (CEPAM) since 2009, and has been Artistic Director and Conductor of the Associação de Bandolins da Madeira (ABM) since 2008, where, from 2010, he also took on the role of President of the entity’s Board. He is also Artistic Director of LIGRA Art & Productions and a member/musician of MFIC (Madeira Free Improvisation Community) since 2011.

Eduardo Martinelli
Eduardo Martinelli Danzi is a Brazilian conductor born in São Paulo. He is currently the conductor of the Orquestra Sinfônica de Campo Grande (Campo Grande Symphony Orchestra), with which he has performed alongside Brazilian soloists and soloists from countries such as the USA, Italy, South Korea, Argentina, Switzerland, Canada, Trinidad and Tobago, Paraguay, Portugal, Bolivia and Uruguay. His repertoire includes traditional symphonic works and important premieres by distinguished composers.

Since 2005, he has worked on developing various music education projects focused on orchestral instruments, aimed at children and young people at risk or in situations of social vulnerability, such as: the Orquestra Jovem da Fundação Barbosa Rodrigues (Barbosa Rodrigues Foundation Youth Orchestra), the Orquestra da Cidade de Três Lagoas (Três Lagoas City Orchestra), the Orquestra Infantil da Fundação Zahran (Zahran Foundation Children’s Orchestra) and the Orquestra de Cordas do Ponto de Cultura do Governo Federal – Viver Bem (Federal Government’s Ponto de Cultura String Orchestra – Viver Bem).
He is the music director of Moinho Cultural Sul Americano, a binational artistic/educational project that takes place on the border between Brazil and Bolivia, in the city of Corumbá-MS. Also for this project, he is the musical arranger and conductor of “Moinho In Concert”.

Tuniko Goulart
Tuniko Goulart was born in Pelotas (RS), in 1967. Coming from a family of musicians, he was recognized by the Ordem dos Músicos Profissionais Brasileiros (Order of Brazilian Professional Musicians) at just 11 years of age. He spent many years traveling through Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina, accompanying major names on the international scene. In tours and recording studios, he has collaborated with several musicians, such as Gilberto Gil, Martinho da Vila, Airto Moreira, Arthur Maia, Flora Purim, Vicente Amigo, Stanley Jordan, Jeff Berlin, Eric Sardinas, Cesária Évora, António Chainho, Giovani Goulart, Filipa Pais, André Sarbib, Isabel Campelo, Rui Veloso, Edu Miranda and many others.

Edu Miranda
Edu Miranda is an unavoidable name in Portuguese and Brazilian music, with a career already spanning 22 years. He has several published works and collaborations, such as with: Gilberto Gil, Mário Laginha, Maria João, Martinho da Vila, Filipa Pais, Pedro Jóia, João Afonso, Rui Veloso, André Sardet, Luís Represas, Isabel Silvestre, Real Companhia, Danças Ocultas and Amina Alaoui, in addition to the work he developed for several years with the great master of the Portuguese guitar António Chainho.

Ricardo Sandoval
Ricardo Sandoval was born in Chile, in 1971, and arrived in Venezuela with his family when he was still very young. At the age of nine, he entered the Escola de Música Vicente Emilio Sojo (Vicente Emilio Sojo Music School). With an extensive career, he obtained a degree in Music. He then went to Germany to further his training in classical mandolin, at the Conservatório Superior de Música de Colônia (Cologne Higher Conservatory of Music), where he obtained his diploma in 2000, with the highest qualifications. He has already received awards at international competitions, such as the one in Varazze (Italy) and Schweinfurt (Germany).

The Instituto Moinho Cultural Sul-Americano
Opened in Corumbá (MS), in 2004, Moinho Cultural is a civil society organization that offers dance, music, technology and computer classes to children and adolescents in situations of social vulnerability in Corumbá, Ladário, Puerto Suárez and Puerto Quijarro. The ongoing training offered by the institution lasts up to eight years. Moinho also works on training performer-creators for young people and adults, through the Companhia de Dança do Pantanal (Pantanal Dance Company), the Orquestra de Câmara do Pantanal (Pantanal Chamber Orchestra) and the Technology Center. The institution’s mission is to reduce social vulnerability in the Brazil-Bolivia border region through access to cultural and technological resources. Since the start of its activities, more than 23 thousand children and adolescents have been served by Moinho.
