To celebrate International Women’s Day, marked on March 8, the Instituto Moinho Cultural Sul-Americano decided to hold a different kind of day, full of information and exchange of ideas. A discussion circle, with the participation of members of the Patrulha Maria da Penha (Maria da Penha Patrol) and businesswomen, showed how women should be treated, what the types of violence are, what domestic violence is, and what support network exists for women victims in Corumbá.
Executive secretary of Moinho Cultural, José Roberto explains that the intention is to raise children’s awareness, still in childhood, about what domestic violence is. “The latest published research shows that the number of domestic violence cases has been increasing in the country. That’s why we are concerned about bringing this subject into Moinho Cultural and addressing it with both girls and boys. It’s important that everyone knows what domestic violence is, even to be able to identify it, and also to know that there is an entire support network to help this woman, in case she is a victim of this kind of situation,” he states.
A municipal guard for 17 years, the coordinator of the Patrulha Maria da Penha in Corumbá, Andreia Castilho, states that this exchange is important, especially so that women grow up knowing what an abusive relationship is.
“It’s important that they know what the types of violence are and understand that they are not obliged to live with it. Today, there is a structure in the municipality to handle these cases,” she explains.
Also a member of the Patrol, André Carneiro spoke directly to the boys. “We brought information to raise their awareness about this practice. It’s important to bring this information so that we make them aware from an early age, so that, when they become family fathers, they don’t engage in this kind of situation and violence against women,” he highlighted.
Also taking part in the conversation was entrepreneur, architect, pastry chef and influencer Sthefany Holanda. Former Moinho Cultural participant, dancer and dentist Yasmin Santos was also invited. They shared their life paths with the children and highlighted how women can work in different fields and be whatever they want.
