Paying tribute to great classics of the 90s, musicians from the Orquestra de Câmara do Pantanal (OCAMP, Pantanal Chamber Orchestra), of the Instituto Moinho Cultural Sul-Americano (South American Moinho Cultural Institute), from Corumbá/MS, are taking part in the Pagode 90 tour of the Nova Orquestra (New Orchestra), which passes through four Brazilian states this August and has the support of the Programa Vale Música (Vale Música Program).
The performances began on August 11 (Sunday), at Aldeia Lagoa – Parque dos Patins (RJ), and, in total, six OCAMP musicians took part in the show: Diego Cuellar (viola), Roque Júnior (violin), Flavia Coelho (violin), Leandro Henrique (percussion), Camila Barbosa (viola), Gabriel Vera (bassoon).
A project by Agência Olga, the Nova Orquestra was created to promote and democratize concert music. To carry out the project, it joined forces with the Programa Vale Música, an initiative of the Instituto Cultural Vale that promotes a collaborative teaching and learning network between students and professionals from major orchestras across the country.
The Moinho Cultural percussionist, Leandro Henrique, 29, says this is his first time traveling with the Nova Orquestra, but that taking part in OCAMP has already resulted in different experiences of this same kind. “I’ve been on other trips provided by the Moinho Cultural, like the exchange to Rio de Janeiro, when I took percussion classes with the teachers of the Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira, but never on the [Nova Orquestra] tour. Today I’m having this wonderful opportunity to make music together with my friends, and I’m very happy and excited about it!” he comments.
A veteran of the partnership with the Nova Orquestra, violinist Flávia Coelho, of OCAMP, recalls her journey, “This is my sixth time with the group. I never imagined myself traveling by plane, getting to know beautiful places, the beach, big theaters, and that wouldn’t be possible without music, without social projects like these and without the partnerships,” she comments. Also according to the 24-year-old member, the biggest expectation now is to feel the whole audience singing and dancing along.
ABOUT THE NOVA ORQUESTRA
An innovative project in search of unique experiences in concert music, the Nova Orquestra is Brazil’s first 100% pop orchestra and seeks to present shows and projects with original and creative repertoires. The Nova made its debut in 2019 at Game XP for more than 100 thousand people; that same year it was also the main attraction of the Rock in Rio Sunset Stage, where it returned in 2022 alongside singer Jão and in the show Uirapuru, with performances every day of the event.
Winner of the Prêmio Profissionais da Música (Music Professionals Award), the Nova Orquestra performed on the main stage of the 2024 Copacabana New Year’s Eve celebration, in Rio de Janeiro, at the Rock The Mountain and Queremos festivals, held an international tour in the United States and performed alongside major names in Brazilian music such as Jão, Pitty, Di Ferreiro, Roberta Campos, Rael, Claudia Leitte, Toni Garrido and others. Still in 2024, the Nova will perform at the Doce Maravilha festival, in Rio.
ABOUT THE PROGRAMA VALE MÚSICA
An original project of the Instituto Cultural Vale, the Programa Vale Música is a collaborative teaching and learning network among students from musical hubs in four states — Pará, Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais and Mato Grosso do Sul — and professionals from the country’s largest orchestras. In all, it involves around 250 professionals and more than 1,000 students in exchanges, classes and artistic residencies. Partners of the Programa Vale Música include the Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira (OSB), the Orquestra Ouro Preto, the Orquestra Filarmônica de Minas Gerais, the Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo (Osesp) and the Nova Orquestra, sponsored through the Lei Federal de Incentivo à Cultura (Federal Culture Incentive Law).
