The Charlier & Martinelli Duo, made up of the performers Celina Charlier and Eduardo Martinelli, will perform this Saturday (03), starting at 7:30pm, at the Catedral Nossa Senhora da Candelária, in Corumbá.

The recital of Brazilian concert music on flute and guitar marks the launch of the second edition of FEMUP (Festival de Música de Câmara do Pantanal, Pantanal Chamber Music Festival), which takes place throughout June and July, in Corumbá. The festival is promoted by the Instituto Moinho Cultural Sul-Americano (Moinho Cultural South American Institute) and by the OCAMP (Orquestra de Câmara do Pantanal, Pantanal Chamber Orchestra).

Flutist Celina Charlier, based for 24 years in New York and with an intense career as an international concert performer, explains that the recital is a mosaic of Brazilian composers from the end of the 19th century to the present day, whose sound languages add to our Brazilian musical identity.

“The flute and the guitar, due to their versatility, because they are easy to carry and more affordable to buy, have always been part of the sound of Brazilian music in every style, era and state. The flute and guitar duo is, in Brazilian music, a duet-symbol of integration and affinity within the expressive heterogeneity of our continental country, just as rice and beans, coffee with milk, and the ball at the foot are in gastronomy and sport”, the performer explains as an example.

Among the honored composers are Villani-Côrtes and Sarrafo, living history – musicians who took part in the first radio and TV orchestras and in the musical creative process of an entire century.

For the arranger and consultant of Moinho Cultural, Eduardo Martinelli, the expectation is that the audience will enjoy the recital. “Celina is an internationally renowned flutist. We are lucky that she has shared her time and spends part of the year in Brazil. I have played with her on several occasions and noticed that the audience is charmed and really enjoys it. She is an exceptional performer, with incredible ability and an enormous body of experience”, he says.

Second edition of FEMUP

The recital with the duo also marks the launch of the second edition of FEMUP. The first edition took place in 2021, and, due to the pandemic, the event was entirely online. This year, the big news is that most of the activities will be in person.

“Even though we have online activities, it won’t be 100% like that. We will have several in-person courses with professionals from various parts of the country and expectations are high. We are eager, because, even though it’s the second edition, being in person makes it quite different”, says Eduardo Martinelli.

For the music director of Moinho Cultural, Corumbá is at a distinguished cultural level for having a concert music festival in the city. “We realize that this city is at a privileged cultural level, especially at the national level. We have about 5 thousand cities in the country and how many produce an event of this nature? When this happens, it is usually in capitals and large cities. Corumbá, by being able to organize a festival like this, through Moinho Cultural, is at a privileged level”, he explains.

Executive director of Moinho Cultural, Márcia Rolon points out that the second edition of FEMUP solidifies concert music in Mato Grosso do Sul. “This festival certainly puts us on the map as an important hub of classical music in western Brazil. In addition to having a Pantanal orchestra, Mato Grosso do Sul also has a festival, which encourages the continuous training of local musicians, exchange with major names in Brazilian concert music and also audience development”, she concludes.
