Show ‘A menina passarinha’ pays tribute to Tetê Espíndola in December

After many years, Moinho In Concert, a show in the format of a public class, held by the Instituto Moinho Cultural Sul-Americano (South American Cultural Mill Institute), returns to be presented in an open square. This time, more than 500 people are involved in the presentation of “A menina passarinha” (“The Little Bird Girl”), which pays tribute to one of the greatest voices from Mato Grosso do Sul: Tetê Espíndola. The show will be presented for the first time on December 2, at Praça Generoso Ponce, in Corumbá.

Executive director of Moinho Cultural and general director of the show, Márcia Rolon explains that this year’s Moinho In Concert is based on the work “A menina passarinha,” by Diane Valdez. “Diane was with us a few years ago and donated the book to our library, and now the book has inspired us. And I also bring a bit of ‘invention’ and poetry, which fits with our way of telling stories through dance and music,” she states.

The idea of paying tribute to Tetê Espíndola, according to Márcia, arose after the OCAMP (Orquestra de Câmara do Pantanal, Pantanal Chamber Orchestra) put on a show with her in Campo Grande last year. The pairing was repeated again in 2023, during the Festival América do Sul.

“With that, we grew closer and the desire came to be nearer and talk about her life. With ‘A menina passarinha,’ the audience will get to know a bit more about the journey of this unique artist, hear some of Tetê’s songs and, at the end, hear her voice, since she will also take the stage,” Márcia reveals.

The show will bring together, besides the children and teenagers served by Moinho Cultural, the OCAMP and also the Cia de Dança do Pantanal (Pantanal Dance Company). In total, around 500 people are involved. The orchestra alone will have 100 members. “That’s why we’re returning to the square after so many years,” says the executive director of Moinho Cultural.

For Tetê Espíndola, pleasure is the word that describes the tribute. “Moinho Cultural is a place that trains new people, new musicians, new dancers, new theater people. That’s very good, not only for Mato Grosso do Sul but for the world. Because they also fly off to other places. Moinho In Concert is going to be a very special moment in my career. I’ll be there to do something different, and that’s very good for me,” says the singer, who has more than 40 years of career.

As for how her participation in Moinho In Concert will be, Tetê says she will let all her musicality come to the surface. “I’m at a moment of really letting the music flow. It’s that moment of giving oneself over completely. What I can reveal is that I’m going to do a duet with a flute, with a very special person who plays the flute,” she reveals.
