On August 25 (Tuesday), Sesc MS will hold a virtual chat about the show Carne Quebrada, by the Cia. de Dança do Pantanal (Pantanal Dance Company). The livestream will air starting at 7:30 p.m. (MS time), on the Sesc MS YouTube channel and on the Sesc Cultura Facebook page.
Moderated by artistic director Márcia Rolon, the meeting includes the former deputy secretary of Policies for Women of the Campo Grande city government, Carla Stephanini, choreographer Wellington Júlio, and the Sesc Cultura MS dance teacher, Cássia Mazzei.
Dancers from the Cia de Dança do Pantanal will also be present.
The show – “Carne Quebrada” was developed by choreographer Wellington Júlio, especially for the CIA DE DANÇA DO PANTANAL. It is inspired by Júlio Ribeiro’s most famous work, “A Carne” (“The Flesh”), published more than a hundred years ago, in 1888, and considered one of the boldest and most curious novels of Brazilian naturalism. The author challenges the role the heroine had been playing in the works of the time and reverses the position of the devastated female and the oppressive male.
Because of its imminent sensuality and pulsing sexual tension, the book caused a scandal by addressing topics until then unknown in the literature of the time, such as free love, divorce, and a new role for women in society. The author tries to show the contradiction between the desires of the flesh and the desires of the mind.
The show “Carne Quebrada” aims to bring to the audience the themes presented in the printed work, through the artistic expression of the dancers during the contemporary dance performance, and this chat will bring up the discussion of how we are living the same themes today.
“It is a way of awakening awareness of human sexuality and the contradictions experienced in the body and mind nowadays, and of bringing in the theme of violence against women and their role in society,” explains the manager of Sesc Cultura, Andréia Gomes.
