The event will also inaugurate the institution’s elevator, making it more accessible
The Instituto Moinho Cultural Sul-Americano (South American Cultural Mill Institute), located in Corumbá, was one of the institutions benefited by Criança Esperança 2022, a partnership between Rede Globo and UNICEF. The project awarded was the “Núcleo de Literatura do Moinho Cultural” (Moinho Cultural Literature Center). The new space will be inaugurated on Friday (3rd), at 4pm, and will now be called the “Augusto César Proença” Library.
Besides having the library space renovated and given new colors, there was an overall redesign to ensure the venue becomes even more attractive to the children and adolescents served by Moinho Cultural.
“The inauguration of the new library coincides with a historic date for Moinho Cultural. This year, we are marking 18 years of history on the Brazil-Bolivia border. We have already served more than 23,000 children and adolescents, and now more than ever, we are certain of how transformative education and culture are. We are immensely grateful to Criança Esperança for providing such an inspiring space for our children,” says Moinho Cultural’s executive director, Márcia Rolon.
In the Literature Center, which occupies the library space, activities such as storytelling, text writing and encouragement of reading through traditional and digital books are offered, creating opportunities for individual growth for each of the students. The center also offers school support, an area where children and adolescents receive support from teachers and physical space to do their homework outside regular school hours.
A partner of Moinho Cultural in various areas, the Corumbá City Hall has maintained the Literature Center’s activities through the Municipal Social Investment Fund for more than six years.
Moinho Cultural’s executive director notes that encouraging reading is a challenge, since the number of readers has been declining in the country. “The latest edition of the Retratos da Leitura no Brasil (Portraits of Reading in Brazil) survey showed that, between 2015 and 2019, the country lost 4.6 million readers. In addition, there was a drop in the percentage of readers among the population aged 11 to 17. So it is extremely necessary for us to encourage reading in every way we can. Even before the new library’s inauguration, we already noticed how much more motivated the children and adolescents feel to dive into the literary universe,” she says.
Another achievement to be inaugurated this Friday is Moinho Cultural’s elevator. The equipment makes the institution’s building accessible. “The elevator was a great dream that has finally come true. Besides ensuring well-being for people with disabilities who visit us, we are opening a door to serve people with reduced mobility and wheelchair users as well,” highlights Márcia Rolon.
