Shows “Fernão Capelo e Gaivota” and “Migrantes” will be presented between July 14 and 19
The Cia de Dança do Pantanal (Pantanal Dance Company), from the Instituto Moinho Cultural Sul-Americano (South American Cultural Mill Institute), performs in Belo Horizonte (MG) on July 14 and 16, and in Rio de Janeiro on the 19th. There will be two different performances, one of them “Fernão Capelo Gaivota” (Jonathan Livingston Seagull), a classic of world literature that gets an adaptation uniting music, literature and dance, being a show together with the Orquestra Ouro Preto (Ouro Preto Orchestra) and the Vale Música project, as well as a performance of the choreography Migrantes, part of the Dança em Trânsito program.
The Cia. De Dança do Pantanal marked, in 2022, five years of existence and aims to explore and focus its contemporary works on one of humanity’s most precious biomes, the Pantanal, which extends across Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay, countries that have the state of Mato Grosso do Sul as neighboring territory, and is considered the largest wetland area on the planet.
Fernão Capelo e Gaivota
The powerful mix of art from different corners of the country became reality in a praised audiovisual production, which now takes to the stage with its first stop in Belo Horizonte. A staged cantata for children’s choir, ballet and orchestra, the production breaks geographic boundaries by connecting the Minas Gerais ensemble to young artists from the Programa Vale Música (Vale Music Program), an original project of the Instituto Cultural Vale (Vale Cultural Institute).
“Fernão Capelo Gaivota,” a best-seller written by Richard Bach, tells the story of a seagull for whom flying was not simply an act of getting around. Flying is an art and, as such, must be trained, practiced and shared with others, generating great transformations. A story about freedom, learning and love, which receives the orchestrated notes in this adaptation signed by conductor Rodrigo Toffolo and which also features heavyweight names such as Tim Rescala, author of the original music, and narration led by the sweet voice of actress Nina Vogel.
The show premieres on July 14, at the Grande Teatro do Sesc Palladium, at 8 pm. On July 19, the artists return to the stage, this time at Teatro Riachuelo, in Rio de Janeiro, at 8 pm.
For Márcia Rolon, coordinator of the Instituto Moinho Cultural Sul-Americano (MS), the project that gave rise to the Cia. de Dança do Pantanal, this work was challenging, but promises a splendid result. “This pursuit of perfection, present in Fernão Capelo Gaivota, is something we, as dancers, constantly pursue, which is why we also identify so much with this work. The music is light, gentle, joyful, childlike and at the same time very deep. It speaks of diversity and brings all the points of the book’s story in a very concrete way, it’s a musical reading.”
Dança em Trânsito Festival – Migrantes
The Cia. de Dança do Pantanal presents the show Migrantes on July 16 at the Dança em Trânsito Festival. The choreographer of the Cia de Dança do Pantanal, Wellington Julio, explains that the show is about the coming and going, and the pains and joys caused by this movement made by migrants and immigrants.
“Migrantes is a work that tells a bit about the realities of those who come and go. Often, these people are forgotten. And the performance speaks a bit about the loves we leave behind when we leave a place in search of something new. It also speaks about happiness and about being welcomed. Many times, we want to sing, speak, be heard, and sometimes we can’t. Depending on the tone of your skin, the shape of your face or your body. Depending on who pulls you back and forward too,” he says.
The show was created from testimonies collected during the creation process, from both migrants and immigrants. The testimonies became movements that are now presented by the company’s dancers.
The performance will be in Belo Horizonte, on July 16, at 10 am, at Praça da Liberdade.
About the Cia de Dança do Pantanal
The Cia de Dança do Pantanal was created in 2017, in the city of Corumbá/MS, on the border with Bolivia, being one of the integrated actions of the Instituto Moinho Cultural Sul-Americano, which has already been running for 18 years. The purpose since the group’s beginning has been to provide access and professionalization opportunities for dancers from South American social projects, as well as to represent the Pantanal territory, promoting dance with repertoires that include neoclassical and contemporary pieces, created by national and international choreographers.
