Twelve young musicians from the Orquestra de Câmara do Pantanal (Pantanal Chamber Orchestra) perform at 5 PM this Sunday (10th) with the Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira (Brazilian Symphony Orchestra, OSB), at Parque Madureira, in the northern zone of Rio de Janeiro.

The Pantanal orchestra is part of the Programa Vale Música (Vale Música Program) in Corumbá, run by the Instituto Moinho Cultural Sul-Americano (South American Moinho Cultural Institute). Music students from the same project in the cities of Belém and Serra (ES) also take part in this afternoon’s concert.

The program includes music by Bizet, Puccini, Villa-Lobos, and other composers, featuring soprano Gabriella Pace as soloist. The conductor will be maestro Renan Cardoso.

The event is free and open to all ages, and celebrates the conclusion of the activities carried out between the OSB and the young musicians of the Programa Vale Música, who took part in educational and artistic activities together throughout this year.

The director and founder of the Instituto Moinho Cultural, Márcia Rolón, told Agência Brasil that the OSB gives online and in-person classes to the entity’s music students in the three cities, and that today’s concert in Rio marks the two orchestras’ celebration of their partnership.

“This [youth exchange] format is very strong and compact, and we have already been working on it for two years,” said Márcia.

At Expo 2020, held in October 2021 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, young musicians from different hubs of the Programa Vale Música performed professionally. Some of the students who will perform in Rio are already professionals, mentors, or teachers at Moinho Cultural. “We train them and they become collaborators of the Institute,” the director noted. “They themselves keep recreating the project,” she added.

Border

The Instituto Moinho Cultural will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2024 with the release of a book telling its story. Márcia Rolón says that over this period, Moinho Cultural has systematized its own methodology for working on the border with Bolivia.

“Today, there is a sociocultural project with a very strong focus on integral education, operating on the border as a culture of peace. On the border, we work on this culture of peace through music, dance, technology, and literary culture, or literacy culture.”

Moinho Cultural has two major artistic groups: the Companhia de Dança do Pantanal (Pantanal Dance Company) and the Orquestra de Câmara do Pantanal (Pantanal Chamber Orchestra), in addition to 450 participants from the border region. “We systematized this, and next year we will launch this method, with the aim of achieving a social franchise, that is, spreading this border conversation.”

This Sunday’s concert and the activities that took place throughout the year are part of Conexões Musicais (Musical Connections), a social responsibility program of the Fundação OSB, active since 2017, which has already been present in 30 municipalities and directly impacted more than 5,500 students.

The initiative’s main goals are to value local culture, promote social transformation in areas of socioeconomic vulnerability, and bring young audiences closer to concert music, providing technical improvement to music students supported by partner social projects.

The Instituto Moinho Cultural began with 180 students in music and dance groups and today counts more than 100,000 people benefited, directly and indirectly.
