Performance was the first open, in-person event since the start of the pandemic

Following the success of the Festival de Música do Pantanal (FEMUP, Pantanal Music Festival), held online in July of this year by the Instituto Moinho Cultural Sul-Americano (South American Moinho Cultural Institute) through the Orquestra de Câmara do Pantanal (OCAMP, Pantanal Chamber Orchestra), the Orchestra resumed open, in-person performances yesterday, September 20, on the Arena Stage of Porto Geral in Corumbá.

The performance featured flutist Celina Charlier, a special guest. Based in New York for 20 years, Celina maintains an intense international career as a flutist across the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, and South Asia.

The special late afternoon also featured a select repertoire, ranging from great classical music composers such as W.A. Mozart, J. Brahms, and Vitorio Monti to icons of Brazilian music: Pixinguinha, Waldir Azevedo, as well as regional music from Mato Grosso do Sul.

“Corumbá is our birthplace. It was here that we began work that has already transformed hundreds of lives. Holding this performance in person, after so long together only online, is a moment of immense joy for us. Immense joy in feeling the audience’s energy and being able to receive their applause is indescribable,” says the Institute’s founder, Márcia Rolon.

The concert was sponsored by the Corumbá City Hall and had cultural support from Fecomércio and Sesc. According to Fecomércio’s president, Edison Ferreira Araujo, actions like this strengthen the culture of Mato Grosso do Sul.

“Wonderful to see the Orchestra performing, an initiative in which we have a great partnership between Moinho and SESC, bringing this culture and art to the people of the city, cultivating the entire culture of Mato Grosso do Sul and as a demonstration of encouragement for our Art. We know that Culture gives people more education and wisdom, and Moinho Cultural does very beautiful work in this regard, in which we are also engaged; we are partners and want to continue together in this partnership,” she says.

As a spectator, Augusta Inês Reitori becomes emotional describing what an event like this symbolizes. “Having an event like this, open to the public, on the edge of our Pantanal, on the Paraguay River, in a wonderful setting, is unique in the world. It’s also a way to promote our nature, the Tourism options we have, and our Art. We are pure Art.”

The Instituto Moinho Cultural Sul-Americano
Located in Corumbá-MS for 16 years, the Institute is a civil society organization (OSC) that offers children and adolescents in situations of social vulnerability from Corumbá, Ladário, Puerto Suarez, and Puerto Quijarro, classes in dance, music, technology, and computing; in addition to a service for social engagement and strengthening bonds between institution, family, school, and participant, and training of performer-creators for youths and adults, through the Companhia de Dança do Pantanal (Pantanal Dance Company), Orquestra de Câmara do Pantanal (Pantanal Chamber Orchestra), and the Technology Center. Its mission is to reduce social vulnerability in the Brazil-Bolivia border region through access to cultural and technological resources.

In 2020, Moinho was recognized by Instituto Doar with the Selo A (Seal A), qualifying as a certified organization. This recognition legitimizes and highlights the professionalism and transparency of the OSC, aiming to further encourage a culture of giving.
